Home Lab Hardware

Quick list of some of my home lab computing.

Most of my home lab is running on virtual hypervisors, my chosen hypervisor is ESXi with vsphere ( This may change if VMUG no longer offer development support)

The Hardware

4 x Intel NUC’s running ESXi 8.0U3 and vSphere
Model : NUC11TNHi7 NUC Pro i7-1165G7
CPU : 11th Gen 4.70 GHz 4 Core 8 Thread 12MB Cache
RAM: 64GB
Storage: 500GB NVME ( I did have a 2TB SSD in here but the NUC would over heat with SSD so replaced the SSD with direct connect to the Synology NAS)
1 x Synology NAS (NFS, CIFS, LUN, iSCSI)
4 x Raspberry Pi Zero W 2 with camera ( used for low power CCTV )
1 x Home Assistant Yellow ( The base for my home automation )
1 x Ubiquity 16 Port PoE Switch
2 x HPE Gen 8 Microservers
1 x HP NL 40 Microserver

1 x Dell r720 2x Intel Xeon E5-2650v4 2.2GHz 256GB RAM SSD H730P 4x 10GbE ( this is a dev server not on all the time due to heat/noise and power consumption)

What running in vSphere

Foreman-Katello
Used to build out all my VM’s and patching of the servers ( Rocky Linux AlamaLinux, RHEL, Oracle Linux, ubuntu)

Windows 2019
Windows AD, DNS ( this will be rebuilt as a bind server)

Ansible / Tower
Automation scripts to build configure hotfix etc

Jenkins
Pipeline CI/CD pipelines

Plex
Used for home movie / tv shows viewing ( not all of my plex servers run virtually I do have some hardware plex servers as they use video cards for transcoding )

Jellyfin
I am considering using this over Plex for me media/tv show

Emby/ TV Headend
used for live TV recording / viewing

Navidrome
My own personal spotify

VPN
OpenVPN, Wireguard, TailScale/Headscale ( Headscale is my main VPN but have tested out a few versions)

Wazuh
CVS patching and hardening of Linux / Windows servers also notifications of potential issues.

Docker / K8
I have a few servers running standaline docker containers also have built out a k8 cluster to make the workload HA

Rundeck
Automation used to run add hock jobs ( similar to Jenkins but runs basic bash scripts and Ansible scripts)

Hadoop
New Project where i look into building a Dev Hadoop cluster ( work in progress )

Python R Studio
Another project I am looking into building an Python R server

CCTV setup
low power CCTV using a mixture of Raspberry Pi Zero W 2 with a very small camera, also using eufy RTSP cameras with some machine learning for my personal NPR and facial recognition with Frigate using Google Corel TPU.

Home Assistant
Recently purchased a Home Assistant Yellow and migrating my automation to this system, for lighting, home burglar alarm , heating and lots of other zigbee, z-wave sensors.

TrueNas
Had some spare hardware so built a TrueNas Core server running on an old HP NL40 its not the fastest of NAS’s but good for archiving, dev DataStores and Steam Cache.

ProxyServer
My proxy server of choice is Nginx with certbot for ssl, I also use geoip2 ( Maximind to block countrys) This is no longer internet facing as now I have decided to use TrueScale/Headscale to access homelabs externally.
